5 cli-fi books to check out!

Can't get enough of apocalyptic and dystopian books? Well, look no further.

Climate Fiction has been around arguably for centuries, but exponential interest in global warming has spawned hundreds of texts that take up climate issues. Enough that it's been given its own sub-genre within the science fiction umbrella: cli-fi. 

New to the genre? Here's a list of five climate fiction books to  get you started (and terrify you)! While this list is by no means exhaustive, it does have something for everybody. . .


Everything from children's book through novel, here are some of cli-fi's greatest offerings:



1. Parable of the Sower, Octavia Butler (1993)

Not only is Octavia Butler a hugely important figure in the sci-fi genre, but she's also clearly prescient. POTS includes a terrifying leader whose slogan is "Make America Great Again."




2. Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood (2003)

Equal parts beautiful and horrifying, Atwood's entry into the Maddaddam Trilogy is a must see for people interested in cli-fi...or good books.






3. I'm With the Bears: Short Stories from a Damaged Planet (2011))

Not into full-length novels? No problem. I'm with the Bears offers a smattering of short stories from some of the most important cli-fi writers in the game. Helen Simpson's "Diary of an Interesting Year" is a personal favorite.




4. Le Transperceneige, Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette (1982), or Snowpiercer Vol. 1: The Escape (2014)

Whether you liked or disliked Chris Evans in Snowpiercer, Le Transperceneige is an excellent graphic novel that tests the malleable boundaries between humans and their environment.

5. The Lorax, Dr. Seuss (1971)

Have kids? Or like Kid Lit? Then this classic is for you. The Lorax has become such a popular figure in children tale lore that it's easy to forget this early cli-fi tale about a small mustachio'd dude who speaks for the trees in the face of blatant of capitalism.
